One of our students wrote a short piece about his Humanist worldview:

"My worldview would be described as a type of atheism called “humanism” – so called because it is based around humanity and its consciousness."

What do you think is true about God?

1. What Do You think is true about god

"My worldview is not a theistic one - I do not believe in a God or supernatural entity, in my opinion God is nothing more than a leftover from irrational, primitive ages in human development when humans did not have a scientific understanding of the world around them and lived in fear without control of their environment. We used to believe that the universe revolved around us, that it was created for us and that we are special, a view still held by most religions; I think that this is incorrect."

What do you think happens when you die?

2. What do you think happens after death

"As my worldview is not supernatural in any way I do not believe in life after death. However a major misconception about an atheistic worldview is that without a God life is a totally pointless affair; many people would say to an atheist like me “If there is no god or life after death then how can you deal with death”. I deal with death by remembering that we are lucky to be alive in the first place and that death is part of the life cycle and that we can do fantastic things in our short life, more than anything available to any other living thing."

What are people?

"I think that the universe does not require a God to explain its existence. The universe and everything in it is the result of blind physical laws and processes. Evolution is the main driver of life and current humans are the result of evolution through natural selection. The wonder of creation does not need a creator but is in itself wonderful."

What do you live for?

"Many people would say that you cannot live a meaningful life without a God to provide guidance, I strongly disagree with this idea: Humans are not special in a holy or cosmic sense, but we are unique. Humans, unlike any other creature, are conscious, rational, self aware and exist as social beings. Now that we are conscious we can have a meaning, and it does not require the existence of a god. Because we are conscious we should use the conscious and rational mind to learn as much about the world as is possible and to apply that conscience to improving the state of all fellow conscious beings. We should be concerned with the many things we can achieve in our own, and collective existence and how we can apply ourselves to the greater good. The universe, in my opinion is totally indifferent, without a god to guide it, but we conscious beings are certainly not."
